The Home Projects We'd Tackle Before the Holidays
November and December have a way of sneaking up on us. Here are some projects you may want to tackle now to be ready!
1. Deep Clean the Spaces You'll Actually Use
You may not need to deep clean your entire house from top to bottom, but focusing on the spaces people will see and use, like the kitchen, bathrooms, entryway, living spaces, and guest rooms, will make a big difference. Getting this done before the holiday rush feels much better than trying to squeeze it in the week before Thanksgiving.
2. Knock Out the Little Repairs You've Been Ignoring
That loose cabinet handle... The door that doesn't close quite right... The lightbulb that's been out for three months… You know the list. Take care of the little things now before they become part of the holiday chaos.
3. Get Your Outdoor Spaces Ready
Before the weather turns, take care of the things that are much easier to do while it's still comfortable outside. Clean up the patio, put away summer furniture, trim what needs trimming, clean up leaves and debris, and make sure outdoor lighting is working.
4. Make the Entryway Work for You
The entryway gets a LOT of traffic during the holidays. Create a place for shoes, coats, bags, packages, and all the things that seem to multiply when people are coming and going. Even a simple basket, hooks, or small storage solution can make a difference.
5. Get the Guest Spaces Ready
If you're expecting overnight guests, don't wait until someone tells you they're coming. Fresh linens, a cleared closet or dresser, working lightbulbs, and a quick clean can turn a spare room into a comfortable guest space without a last-minute scramble.
6. Look Ahead at the Projects That Need a Contractor
If there's a larger project you've been putting off, October is a good time to start the conversation. Contractors can get busy, materials can take time, and some projects simply take longer than expected. You don't necessarily need to finish everything before the holidays, but knowing your plan is a lot better than trying to figure it out in November.
7. Don't Forget the Practical Stuff
Change your HVAC filter. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check your exterior lights. Clean your fireplace if you use it. These aren't glamorous projects, but they're the things that make your home feel comfortable and ready for the season.
The goal isn't to make your house perfect before the holidays. It's to do a little now so you're not doing everything later.
Pick the 3 things you've been putting off the longest, or the ones you feel will make the biggest difference, and start there.
Your November self will thank you!
