Spring break is around the corner, and whether you’re heading out of town for a few days or a full week, a little preparation at home can give you serious peace of mind.

Before you pack your bags, here are our top reminders for homeowners.

1. Unplug What You Can
Unplug small appliances, chargers, and electronics (unless necessary). It reduces fire risk and protects against power surges.

2. Consider Turning Off the Water
For longer trips, many homeowners choose to shut off the main water supply. Even a small leak can cause significant damage if it goes unnoticed for days. If that feels extreme, at least turn off water to washing machines and sinks where possible.

3. Take Out Trash + Clean Out the Fridge
Empty all trash cans and discard perishables. Coming home to a clean, odor-free house is always worth the extra 10 minutes before leaving.

4. Pause Deliveries + Subscriptions
Look ahead at Amazon deliveries, subscription boxes, grocery deliveries, meal kits, etc. Reschedule or have a neighbor bring them inside so packages don’t pile up.

5. Hold or Forward Mail
A stuffed mailbox signals vacancy. Place a temporary hold with USPS or ask a trusted neighbor to collect mail.

6. Check Cameras + Smart Devices
If you have Ring cameras or a security system, confirm they’re connected, check battery life, and test notifications. Better to test before you leave than troubleshoot from the beach.

7. Adjust Thermostat Thoughtfully
You don’t need to shut HVAC off entirely. Adjust temperatures moderately to prevent extreme swings that can stress systems.

8. Light + Visibility Strategy
Timers for lights can create the appearance of occupancy. Keep blinds positioned naturally (not fully shut everywhere).

9. Schedule Grocery Delivery for Return Day
One of our favorite tricks: schedule grocery delivery for the evening you get home. You’ll thank yourself.

10. Clean Before You Go
Future you deserves to walk into a tidy home. A quick reset before leaving makes returning so much better.

Spring break should feel relaxing, not stressful.

A little preparation now means fewer worries while you're away and an easy transition when you get back. And if you ever need a trusted vendor, plumber, or handyman before a trip, we’re always happy to connect you!
