Sorry to break it to you but, the idea of the "forever home" has been sold to us as the ultimate goal in the American Dream. It’s that cozy house you buy with the intent of staying in it for decades, raising your kids, and growing old in the same place. It’s the picket fence, the two-car garage, the yard with room for a garden. But here’s the reality: there’s no such thing as a forever home.

Sure, some people might stay in the same house for most of their lives, but that doesn’t make it a forever home. Life changes, and homes need to adapt to those changes. Here's why the "forever home" is an outdated myth and why it’s worth rethinking how we approach our living spaces.

1. Life Isn’t Static

When we buy a house, we often think of it in terms of "forever," but our lives rarely stay the same. A person’s job, relationships, or even lifestyle can drastically change over time. People get new job offers in different cities, they need to move closer to family, or perhaps they simply fall out of love with the neighborhood. Things change, and your home might not fit your needs anymore.

The house you buy in your 20s may be the perfect starter home, but by your 40s, you might realize you need more space, better amenities, or even a different vibe. And that’s perfectly okay. The notion that we need to "settle" for one place forever doesn’t allow for the kind of fluidity that life demands.

2. The World is More Mobile Than Ever

Thanks to technology and remote work, people are more mobile than ever. Many individuals are no longer tied to one location for work. Some people even thrive on the idea of living in different cities, countries, or regions every few years, chasing new opportunities, experiences, and adventures. The average person now moves more frequently than previous generations. The idea of staying in one house forever is not only unlikely for many, but it can also limit life experiences.

3. Personal Growth and Changing Priorities

As we grow older, our preferences change. Maybe you dreamt of owning a big home in the suburbs when you were younger, but after years of commuting, you now crave the hustle and bustle of city life. Or perhaps you thought you’d always be a two-car, big-yard person, but now the idea of downsizing to a more minimalist lifestyle feels like the right choice. Your forever home might be the one you feel suits you best right now, but that may not be true in a few years.

4. The Desire for Change and New Experiences

Sometimes, the idea of a forever home can be limiting. People naturally evolve, and so do their desires. The novelty of moving into a new place, experiencing different cultures, or finding a new part of the world that excites them is a part of life. The idea of a forever home locks us into one physical space, preventing us from exploring new opportunities and broadening our horizons.

If the idea of moving every few years or downsizing sounds like a negative thing to you, consider it this way: moving offers the chance to refresh, rediscover what you want, and realign your space with your current self.

Rethinking the “Forever Home”

The truth is, a forever home is a myth. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a home that provides stability and comfort, but the idea of holding onto a place indefinitely can be restrictive and unrealistic. Embrace the fluidity of life. Your home will likely change as you do—whether that means moving to a new city, downsizing, upgrading, or simply moving closer to a new chapter in your life.

Instead of focusing on the idea of a forever home, focus on finding the right home for you right now—one that fits your current lifestyle, needs, and dreams. Life is constantly evolving, and so should your home. Buying a home is certainly a big decision, but it is doesn't have to be a permanent decision.
